Water Flow Sensor – YF-S201 Fluid Sensor
Water flow sensor can be used to measure the flow of liquids, i.e. the consumption of liquids in industrial or domestic usage.
For example, you can make a robotic cocktail dispensing machine, and can use this sensor to accurately measure components like Soda, Water, etc.
Water flow sensor consists of a plastic valve body, a water rotor, and a hall-effect sensor.
When water flows through the rotor, rotor rolls. Its speed changes with a different rate of flow. The hall-effect sensor outputs the corresponding pulse Signal.
Water/Fluid Flow Sensor Features
Use this flow sensor to measure the rate to the flow of liquids.
The sensor will have to be attached to the liquid line whose flow is to be measured.
A pinwheel inside the sensor moves as the liquid flows through the sensor. A hall effect sensor within the sensor senses the rotation of the pinwheel and outputs a digital pulse for every rotation.
By coating the pulses from the sensor, you can easily sense liquid flow through the sensor.
This water flow sensor module can be easily interfaced with Microcontrollers, Arduino Boards and Raspberry Pi.
Connect the PWM output of this module to interrupt pin of microcontroller unit and count the number of pulses / interrupt per unit time. The rate of water flow will be directly proportional to the number of pulses counted.
The sensor comes with three wires – Red (5V-24V), Black (Ground) and Yellow (Output pulse)
Note : Color may vary depending on the availability.

Hardware Hooking Up
Connecting the water flow sensor to Arduino requires minimal effort. Connect the VCC (Red) and GND (Black) wires of the water flow Sensor to the 5v and
Connect the VCC (Red) and GND (Black) wires of the water flow Sensor to the 5v and GND of Arduino, and link Pulse Output (Yellow) wire of the water flow sensor to Arduino’s Digital pin 2.
PLEASE Note : The water flow sensor is not a power-hungry type; it draws a maximum of 15-20mA at 5V DC input!
